Note: I made the above comment back when the question read "Name the first non-Catholic American president".

That said, the answer this new question is also George Washington. Maybe. There is actually considerable debate as to whether he was a deist or a Christian.

Yeah, weren't a lot of the founding fathers deists? I think Jefferson was, at least. I vote Washington, too.

This is assuming you're using "American president" in the "President of the United States under the 1787 Constitution" sense, not the "President of the United States, In Congress Assembled" sense.

Hmmmm. I have often wondered if these questions were for real...

Anyways, George Washington was Episcopalian, there was only one Catholic President (Kennedy) and depending how you define Christian )for example including Jehovah's Witnesses) there have been no non-christian presidents. And thats likely to stay the norm for quite some time.
